Cell phone radiation may help with Alzheimer's symptoms
2010-01-07

Cell phone radiation had positive effects in mice suffering from Alzheimer's disease, researchers said this week.

A study at the University of South Florida placed an electronic device in the midst of 96 mice to simulate the effects of electromagnetic waves given off by cell phones. The mice were genetically predisposed to have increased deposits of a protein called beta-amyloid in their brains; plaques of the protein are indicative of Alzheimer's disease.

Electromagnetic waves erased beta-amyloid deposits in old mice with Alzheimer's and prevented protein plaques from building up in younger Alzheimer's mice, the USF study found.

The technology could benefit humans, suggested USF researcher Chuanhai Cao, if the electromagnetic parameters to "prevent beta-amyloid aggregation and remove pre-existing beta amyloid deposits from the brain" are developed.

Non-demented mice in the study were found to have improved memory, too, suggesting that the benefits of electromagnetic radiation could be manifold.

Cell phone radiation has been the target of concern in recent years, but the World Health Organization and the National Institutes of Health say that cell phone use is safe.

With Alzheimer's disease becoming more prevalent - the number of Alzheimer's sufferers should double every 20 years, a September 2009 study says - new treatment technologies will be valuable.
